As the awards season winds down, the British Academy Film Awards, also known as the Baftas, will be held on February 19.These are the most important ceremonies in the British film industry, serving as the equivalent of the Oscars in the United Kingdom.

Usually, important figures such as the Prince and Princess of Wales attend to present an award, as well as many important actors and actresses from Hollywood, who fly to London. The BAFTA represents the best cinematographic work in the past year on a national and international scale.

Even though Latinos have appeared on the BAFTAS winners list, the awards have a reputation for being more exclusive. However, just last year, the animated movie Encanto and Afro-Latina actress Ariana DeBose took home the award. In recent years, figures such as Alejandro G. Iñarritu, Alfonso Cuaron, Damián Szifron, and Guillermo del Toro have been winners of the Baftas.

This year, we have four Latinos in different categories running for the award. Ana de Armas was nominated for best actress for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in the drama film Blonde. Her work to reincarnate the late actress is breath-taking, as she looks remarkable. This film tells a fictional biopic of Marilyn Monroe’s most important life moments and how her life ended. Armas has been nominated for many other awards for this performance.

Guillermo del Toro is back, but this time with a different form of film that has found our younger selves’ hearts as he recreates the story of Pinocchio. This version differs greatly from the Disney version in that it focuses on the actual story and a glimpse into Del Toro's mind. Nominated as the best animated movie, this one has already taken home the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards. This will be Del Toro's third victory.

Argentina 1985 has shown its potential by taking all the awards home for best foreign film. Director Santiago Mitre digs deep into the most important trial in Argentina by telling the story of a group of lawyers who are facing the deadliest dictatorship’s crimes to bring justice to the victims as the odds are against them. Argetina 1985 depicts the real consequences that Latin American countries have faced and forgotten. As it has won the latest awards, this film commemorates our Latino past. Check out our interview with director Mitre and actor Ricardo Darín.

Finally, Chilean cinematographer Claudio Miranda, better known for his work in Life of Pi and Oblivion, is nominated for best cinematography for his work in Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to the classic Top Gun starring Tom Cruise. He has won the Academy Award and the Bafta for Life of Pi and has been nominated various times in the category.
